Bookbinding Workshop

Today, Professor Sharon Morris from the Slade School of Fine Art visited Aberystwyth University to deliver workshops as part of this year's Spineless Wonders project. The workshop is part of an ongoing project researching small press publications, including artists’ books.

In the workshop, Sharon showed several hand-made zines, small books, and paper-based art structures; it really made me think about all the other ways of displaying paper-based art besides hanging it on the wall in a frame.

We started with a reasonably basic zine.

I then created the paper accordion style structure.

My favourite was the Japanese stab-binding book; we cut the paper, created front covers, drew our own template, and then sewed the pages together using an awl, a bookbinding needle, and linen thread. There was something really simple and peaceful in this process. I’m curious how some of my small prints might look if bought together similarly.
